Expert Answers about BMW Straight Tongue Trailer Coupler

  • Is there a Way to Replace Slide On Demco DA91 Disc Brake Actuator For No Coupler Drop?
  • We do have the Replacement Inner Slide # DM12808-97 you could use with the Demco Trailer Coupler # DM15791-97 on your Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM8750311. This would allow you to position the coupler at several different heights to best level your trailer. Otherwise you would have to drill new holes for the Actuator # T4747220 which has a straight coupler out of the actuator.

  • Could Demco 21k Coupler Replace Dexter A-160 Surge Coupler
  • Hey Bill, I checked out pictures of the mounting brackets of your Model A-160 actuator and the most similar straight coupler to it would be the Demco part # DM15931-95 that you were looking at. You should be able to get at least two of the bolts through it and your trailer tongue but worst case scenario you might need to drill additional holes.

  • How Tight Should Nut be For Curt Coupler Repair Kit for 2" Posi-Lock Coupler
  • There isn't a specific number for how tight the nut should be for the Curt Coupler Repair Kit for 2" Posi-Lock Coupler Latches - Curt Straight Tongue Couplers # C25194. You're correct to just tighten it as much as you can until the ball will come out when it's unlatched, and as far as tension a little bit of play is okay, as that will still allow you to close the latch.

  • Will the Demco Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler Fit a Trailer Tongue Wider then 3 Inches?
  • No, it will not sorry. The Demco Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler item # DM16080-95 won't fit a trailer tongue that is wider than 3". Additionally, I do not have a coupler like this that will fit a channel wider then 3". You may be able to use a channel bracket like item # BDAC3000300, weld it to the end of the tongue, and then use the coupler item # BDA256C0317.

  • Internal Dimensions Of The Demco Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # DM13689-95
  • Hey Doug, The inside dimensions of the Demco Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # DM13689-95 are 3" tall x 3" wide x 5" long (pictured below). The sides of the coupler don't need to fully cover the frame tube height-wise. As long as you have a 3" wide frame channel to mount to you'll be fine to drill through and bolt on the coupler with some of the frame extending below the coupler.

  • Trailer Coupler for 3 Inch Square Stock Steel Tongue Compatibility
  • The 3 inch couplers like the Bulldog Cast Head Coupler w/ Wedge Latch - 2" Ball - 5-Position Adjustable Channel - 8,000 lbs # BDA2005C0317 (no longer available) have a 3 inch inner dimension to the channel mount meaning the coupler itself will be 3 inches wide or just a hair under to fit and be adjustable. The channel will need to be welded to your 3 inch square stock steel tongue. If you don't need the adjustability on the trailer side, you can use a standard bolt on coupler like the...

  • Can 21k Demco Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler Be Welded On
  • Hi Brett, Yes, technically you can weld on the 21,000 lb Demco Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # DM16080-81. It's got a black powder coat though, so while I'm not a welder, my understanding is you have to strip that all off before welding. If you really want to weld and not bolt on a coupler the only other option for a 2-5/16", 21k coupler for a 3" tongue is the Dexter Coupler for 2-5/16" Ball - Weld On # T1755000. I'd go with that instead of the Demco if welding is your preference.

  • How Do I Install The C13800 Coupler If The Tongue Only Has One Hole
  • Hello Anibal. The Trailer Coupler # C13800 does require 2 bolts for mounting to the tongue. If your trailer only has 1 bolt hole, a second hole will need to be drilled. The mounting holes need to be 3" apart on center. I am not sure how the original coupler was only installed with 1 bolt, but you will definitely need to add a second hole. For hardware I recommend you use the Curt Channel-Mount Coupler Hardware Kit # C25388.

  • Replacement 2" Ball Coupler Options For A 2" Wide Trailer Tongue
  • Demco unfortunately doesn't have an EZ-latch coupler for a 2" wide channel so you're left with three options: etrailer # CT-3001-Z (3-1/16 bolt hole spacing) Curt # C82CR (3" bolt hole spacing) Dutton-Lainson # DL13835 (3" hole spacing) Of the three options the Curt # C82CR is going to be the easiest to use since it just has a 1/2" diameter hitch pin to slip through the coupler and lock the ball in place. The only other option would be to have some 1/2" steel plates added to the...

  • Can Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System Be Used with an Underslung Trailer Coupler
  • Thanks for reaching out, Joe! You can technically make the Curt TruTrack fit with an underslung coupler by using longer brackets like the 8" # C17515 or 10" # C17516 but I don't really recommend doing this because the TruTrack wasn't really designed to work with an underslung setup. Instead, I recommend using a weight distribution system designed specifically for an underslung coupler like what we find with the 10K Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU55FR which works well with loaded trailer tongue...

  • Can 41" Extension Be Added to Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit on a 2,990 lb Gross Weight Trailer
  • Great question, Wayne! The 5K Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit for 2" x 3" Trailer Tongue # FHDPB230101 is designed more for cutting into an existing trailer tongue so you gain the ability to fold it away for easier storage. If you have a really short tongue then it's possible to add some more material to it and still maintain a respectable weight rating . For example, in the weight rating chart it states that if the edge of the coupler back to the furthest pivot hole on the hinge kit...

  • Is There a 50MM Coupler For an EZ Loader Boat Trailer
  • Since your tow vehicle has a non-detachable hitch ball you are going to have to look into a different coupler. The only couplers we have for a 50mm ball is a Multi-Fit like the Dexter # T2343400. This particular coupler does bolt to a 3" pole tongue and depending on your current bolt pattern may require drilling additional holes. It is rated for up to 5,000lbs so you would want to verify if this is enough for your EZ Loader trailer.

  • Can I Install the Demco Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler w/ Only Two Bolts?
  • No, it won't. You'll be able to attach the Demco Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler item # DM15000-52 but it won't have the same capacity rating because it is designed to be attached with all 4 bolts. It should not be expected to perform as advertised with only half of the mounting bolts securing it. I recommend installing it and then drilling out the other holes so you can use all 4 bolts.

  • Mounting Hole Spacing For The Curt QuickPin No-Latch Trailer Coupler # C82CR
  • Hey William, The Curt QuickPin No-Latch Trailer Coupler # C82CR fits a 2" wide tongue channel and the mounting holes are spaced 3" apart from center to center. You can pick up the recommended hardware (1/2" Hex bolt - grade 5 qty. 4 and 1/2" Nylock nut - grade 5 qty. 4) at your local hardware store to get it mounted to the tongue.

  • How Many Bolt Holes Should Dexter Coupler Actuator DX89FR Use to Install
  • If you don't mind drilling Jeremy I would recommend using all three mounting holes of the Dexter Actuator part # DX89FR or if you know a welder just have them weld it to the trailer. If you were going to only use two though use whichever two line up best with the coupler slid as far onto the trailer frame as possible if that makes sense. That would put the least amount of leverage on the coupler.

  • Replacement Coupler for Trailer Switching from Surge to Electric Brakes
  • The Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # CT-5003-Z has a 3" wide channel designed to fit a 3" wide tongue. If you're saying it is 3-1/2" wide this wouldn't fit either. To save yourself some money I would just drill into the old coupler and run bolts through it to permanently lock it out. This is a common solution when making this conversion, I apologize for not throwing that into my original answer. You can return it, and I linked the full policy down below under "Featured Help Information."...

  • Adding length to boat trailer
  • Hey Robert, thanks for reaching out! We have the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit for 3" x 3" Trailer Tongue # FHDPW330300 but this is only able to help add 4' to the tongue. Since you're needing a bit more length you'll want to reach out to a trailer shop and see if they can modify something for you.

  • Will Adding an A-Frame Bike Rack Add to the Trailer's Tongue Weight?
  • Yes it is to be counted when calculating your total tongue weight. So if you were using the Hitch-It 2 Bike Rack for Straight Tongue Trailers # LC731138 maxed out with two bikes weighing 80-lbs total, you'd need to then add 80-lbs to your total tongue weight.
